Beijing Olympic Games that attracts global eyes is on the mark. It will be another sales peak for licensed merchandises related to the quadrennial sport event. TOY INDUSTRY has delivered coverage on the development prospect on Olympic Games market in the issue of December, 2005. At present, though development program for licensed Olympic Games merchandise ahs been rolled out for years, it is found that, there is still a lot of opportunity for toy maker to get involved.
Olympic, or sales peak At the beginning of 2008, The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) held the annual licensees meeting and the last ordering meeting for licensed merchandise before the opening of Olympic Games. All 68 licensed makers exhibited in the ordering meeting, displaying large quantity of licensed products.
It is known that, since the licensed merchandise program began on November 2, 2005, exceeding 7,000 commodities in 14 categories have been launched, half of which are various toys, stationery and apparel that suitable for kids and youth. Toys in mascot Fuwa style have been always the favorite items in licensed retailers.
BOCOG has increasingly known domestic market well, providing flexible technique in product mix. In every important counting down time, licensed merchandises are launched and promoted correspondingly. A succession of sales climax has been achieved, gaining good market response.
Wang Yu, vice director for Marketing Development, BOCOG reviewed in the ordering meeting held on January 8th that, this year is a determining year that welcomes the sales peak for licensed merchandises. Before the opening of last session, licensed merchandises were once sold out. In fact, BOCOG has made comprehensive study on previous sessions of Olympic Games, as well as China’s market. With scientific analyse, BOCOG has programmed production volume and stock with markers and retailers. Supply should be guaranteed in moderate volume, not excessive and not in shortage. Common people, foreign tourists, athletes, coaches…every consumer will be able to buy what he likes.
More retailing spots After merchandise licensing program was initiated, product lines have been incredibly more products have been rolled out and sales channel is perfected. By the end of 2007, BOCOG had confirmed 68 licensed makers and 76 licensed retailers, and authorized over 2,000 retailing stores throughout the country.
On August 7th last year, one year before the opening of Olympic Games Beijing, BOCOG opened the first flagship store for licensed merchandise in Gongmei Mansion, which is situated in the busiest part of Beijing—Wangfujing. With a total area of 650 square meters, the store got striking sales at the first day, receiving over 60,000 consumers and harvesting sales of ¥800,000. In the following few days, the flagship store had maintained a sales of ¥3,000,000 or so. Total sales of the month exceeded ¥30,000,000.
In order complement the sales in brick-and-mortal stores, BOCOG authorized last year two related online shops (www. 2008eshop.cn and www.bj2008eshop.com). Badges, T-shirts, toys, stationery, arts and crafts…totally over 1,000 goods are available for consumers at home and abroad.
Official in Marketing Development, BOCOG reviewed that, administration on licensed makers and distributors of Olympic Games merchandises would be enhanced. Products with reasonable price are developed to consumers’ taste. At the same time, retailing location is well arranged to facilitate consumers’ buying, and supply is guaranteed. According to plan, before August when Olympic Games starts, there will be 10,000 units that sell licensed merchandises for the grand event.
Still chance ahead Licensed merchandise program is one of the three parts that composing marketing development for Olympic Games, which currently goes in full process. It is known that, though BOCOG’s recruiting of licensed makers and retailers have been finished generally, there is still some chance to get involved.
Firstly, companies or any individual that is capable to offer commodities design can contact with licensed makers for cooperation.
Secondly, licensed retailers for Olympic Games 2008 are required to have strong financial power (with registered capital of over ¥5,000,000), extensive sales network and good experience on brand agency. At present, there are 77 licensed retailers. Some of them are authorized to develop first grade distributors. Any company that has intent to join the business can call these retailers fro details. Qualification, condition and other related affairs are negotiable between retailer potential distributor. Final decision must go through audit and approval by BOCOG.
