The Toy Retailers Association represents 75% of toy retailers and is uniquely placed to make predictions based on 50 years of consumer knowledge and tracking the latest trends in the market.

The toys will be displayed in two issues. Firstly, you will see those of “Pre-school”, “Boys” and “Girls”.

Pre School

The Pre-school category (from birth to 3 years) is worth £728m and is the fastest growing sector in the toy market with 10% growth in 2006.

2007 will see the launch of the new and exciting toys the Smart Cycle (Mattel) and new Thomas & Jeremy Airport Set (Tomy) which will complement the already successful Tomica range on the market.

In this character driven sector, Thomas, Dora the Explorer, Fifi and the Flowertots, Peppa Pig and Lazytown, to name a few, have all generated impressive sales in 2006 and a staggering 18% growth for the licensed pre-school sector.

New British-born concepts are also making history this year. In the Night Garden (Hasbro), the acclaimed new BBC release from the makers of Teletubbies is one, and Roary The Racing Car (Vivid), is the other. The minute that product hit the shelves, consumers headed to the shops on mass.

Boys

The boys’ market (4 years and over) was worth £753m in the 12 months to June 2007, representing a third of the total traditional toy market. Sales for this group increased by 11% in the last 12 months due mainly to licenses.

Doctor Who’s come back rejuvenated the Action Figures market in 2006 and in the first 8 months of 2007, the category saw an amazing 28% increase year on year – the biggest rise in the toy market – boosted by movie merchandise including the popular Spider-Man, Transformers and Power Rangers.

In addition to the figures, role play items such as the Ben 10 watch and the Power Rangers blasters have also proved winners.

Vehicles have also seen a large increase since the beginning of 2007, mainly driven by two factors: the continued success of the Disney/Pixar ‘Cars:The Movie’ - which more than a year after its release doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

Girls

Toys sales for girls aged 4 years upwards were worth £671m in the 12 months to June 2007. Dolls sales - one of the most competitive sectors in the toy market – represent the bulk of sales at 30%.

In 2007, Barbie (Mattel) and Bratz (Vivid) both have new developments with a focus on fashion.

Zapf Creation brings out a new Baby Annabell – the best selling large doll in recent years – to complement its swimming Baby Born. Mattel will also release a new large doll called My Baby, and Hasbro will concentrate on its very successful Littlest Pet Shop range with the new Play & Display pet Town Playset.

Playmobil, an old favourite for boys, is bringing out a portable doll’s house with accessories and Flair is launching new Sylvanian Families sets with the Grand Hotel tipped for success.You read it here first!
