The whole world is overspread with a cloud of credit crisis aiming at title of “made in China”. It is a quality wave at the very beginning but gradually evolves into trading storm, engulfing larger range of products. In US’s market, a succession of recalls on large quantity of toys have forced safety problems of toys that made in China to be one of the focus of the storm.
With two decades of rapid growth, China has developed into the largest production base for global toys. The year 2006 sees totally 22 billion units of toys exported to outside the country, making up 75 percent of the world’s toy market. Among toys imported by US, around 87.21 percent are from China. Besides, China’s products compose 80 percent of Europe’s market. Statistics from General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) shows that, 99 percent of exported products from China is up to standard and less than 1 percent is rejected for failure in quality inspection. Kids’ toys and foods go through much stricter safety assurance. According to undercount, totally 300,000 batches of toys are distributed to US, and during the same period, there were 29 recalling cases—it is a very small percentage.
Market shows no mercy, only letting pass those with quality assurance. The above statistics explain that, most of toys made in China tally with safety standard of importing countries, which have bring infinite happiness to kids all around the world. Undeniable, some toys with tag of “made in China” have flaw in quality, and some companies have leak in management. Actually, Chinese government requires companies to envisage the fact and take appropriate measures, so as to improve quality and operation. However, if some countries or groups of great influence utilize the affair to revolt against China, arrive at fallacy with individual phenomena and exaggerate the affair mala fide, it is totally the trick of protectionists. We are strongly against this new version of “theory of threatening China”.
Historically, when any up-and-coming young country grows up in stage of economy, it would inevitably impose impact to original international economic pattern. At the same time, it would be questioned or rejected by some people. Today’s condition of China has been experienced by most of emerging exporting countries. For instance, when its auto cars exported to US firstly exceeded one million in 1970s, Japan was immediately criticized by US’ media.
Therefore, judging from the other respect, global worry on “China’s toy” can be exactly translated into the well-development of “China’s toys”. However, we have to realize clearly that, large quantity of export of China relies on OEM business, with little original brands. At the beginning of industrial development, OEM pattern is suitable for China’s national situation and is an active mode of production. But nowadays, its disadvantages emerge gradually, such as tying makers in innovation and creation and breeding dependent thought. This would not benefit industrial development from a long term.
At present, lots of toy makers have passed through the process of earlier accumulation, which have laid a solid foundation on production capacity, technique, business management, funds transfer, etc. Moreover, some have even gained much advanced production technique among others in the world. We suggest that, companies should increase their investment on original developed products with more science and technology element and decrease OEM products step by step. We will pursue overall constructional adjustment led by original innovation. China’s toy industry would be advanced to a new seedtime. |
