| Hong Kong Artist Wins Japan＇s 1st ＇Manga Nobel Prize＇ |

Lee Chi Ching, the 43-year-old Hong Kong artist behind the Sun Zi's Tactics comic series, has won the first International Manga Award from Japan's Foreign Ministry. Lee based his 1995-2006 work on the real-life Chinese military strategist that wrote The Art of War.
The three runners-up that were also announced on June 29 are China's 28-year-old Kai (1520), Malaysia's 30-year-old Benny Wong Thong Hou (Le Gardenie), and Australia's 26-year-old Madeleine Rosca (Hollow Fields). Seven Seas has just released the first volume of Hollow Fields in North America earlier in June. The ministry has invited all four artists to a 10-day visit in Japan for the July 2 awards ceremony in Tokyo. 146 entries from 26 countries were submitted for the competition that Foreign Minister Tarō Asō has nicknamed the "Nobel Prize of Manga." China (including Hong Kong) submitted the most entries—24—of any country. England and Germany followed next with 15 and 14 entries, respectively. Five were submitted from the United States. |
