Toys Recall Report of US CPSC

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announces the following recall in voluntary cooperation with the firm below.

Sky Rangers Park Flyer Radio Control Airplanes

Report Released Date:July 24, 2007

Units: About 21,000

Distributor: Estes-Cox Corp., of Penrose, Colo.

Hazard: The airplanes are launched by hand and can explode near the consumer’s head, posing a risk of temporary hearing loss and injuries to eyes, face and hands.

Incidents/Injuries: Estes-Cox has received 45 reports of airplanes exploding, including 22 reports of consumers experiencing temporary ear pain or hearing being affected; five reports of minor burns to hands, faces or eyes; two reports of chest impact from debris; two reports of eye injuries; and one report of a cut hand. One consumer sought medical attention for burning eyes.

Description: This recall involves Model 4116 Sky Rangers Park Flyer radio control airplanes, which come with a black battery charger. The airplanes have a wingspan of about 14 inches, a light blue, white and orange polystyrene foam fuselage, and a copper coil on the rudder. Airplanes with a warning sticker on the fuselage near the on/off switch are not included in the recall.

Sold at: Hobby stores and other retailers nationwide from September 2005 through December 2006 for between $20 and $40.

Ball Rattles, Wrist Rattles, Wind-Up Toys

Units: About 2,000

Importer: Tri-Star International Inc., of Newark, Calif.

Hazard: These toys contain small parts, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: The recall involves three different types of toys. The ball rattle is a multi-colored, 3-inch ball with oval openings and a small hexagon opening at each end. The wrist rattle toy is a white plastic wristband toy with six multi-colored balls with small bells inside. The wind-up toy is a 7.5-inch pink giraffe with yellow legs and a green wind-up knob below the tail of the giraffe.

Sold at: Dollar stores in California from January 2005 through May 2007 for about $1.

Discovery Bunny Books

Hazard: The seam on the bunny’s left hind leg can open exposing a plastic squeaker toy contained inside a cloth bag, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: Bookspan has received one report of a 4-month-old infant who began to choke on the plastic squeaker. The parent noticed the infant beginning to choke and cleared the squeaker from his throat.

Description: This recall involves Discovery Bunny yellow cloth books. The mid-section of the yellow and white plush stuffed bunny opens to a six-page cloth book. The plush bunny has black & white checkered ears and feet. The “SoftPlay” logo is printed on a tag sewn into the bunny toy.

Baby Buddy Clip-on Books

Hazard: The metal clip used to attach the book to a stroller or article of clothing can break, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: Bookspan has received one report of a clip breaking when an 8-month-old baby pulled on the toy while attached to a play mat. No injuries were reported.

Description: This recall involves Baby Buddy clip-on clothes/stroller books. The 4-inch round book titled “Baby Faces” displays eight babies making faces that correspond with the emotion listed on the page. A wooden bead strap with 10 small beads and four wooden circles is attached to the book. Baby Buddy is one of six books sold in a set.

Sold through: Bookspan mail-order catalogues and www.bookspan.com (to book club members only) from September 2006 through March 2007 for between $17 and $27.

IQ Preschool™ Take-Apart Townhouse

Distributor: Small World Toys, of Culver City, Calif.

Hazard: Small magnets used to connect the wooden pieces to the sides of the townhouse can fall out. Magnets found by young children can be swallowed or aspirated. If more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforations or blockages, which can be fatal.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC and Small World Toys have received two reports of magnets coming off of the townhouse pieces. No injuries have been reported.

Description: These wooden toys, for children ages “18+ months,” are shaped like houses measuring 8.5 inches high by about 4.5 inches wide. They have nine pieces that children can disassemble and reassemble. Each house has a green chimney and a blue and yellow striped pillar with a purple base at each corner. The sides of the house have four removable panels of different shapes with red knobs that children use to pull the panels off. “IQ Preschool™” appears on the side of the house below the blue and green rectangular panel. Model number 2408808 appears on the packaging.

Sold at: Toy stores and various other retailers nationwide and through catalogs from December 2004 through February 2007 for about $21.
